Proper German cookingMissing some proper German cooking in Berlin? In the middle of some of the best shopping streets is Lebensmittel in Mitte. An old grocery store with worn wooden tables and benches, there is proper, trend-free Southern German food with beer, schnapps and wine. Lunch is great, with specials on the black board. Go for a puffy crusted Wienerschnitzel with mustardy potato salad, browned Spätzle-pasta with plenty of cheese and a meaty Schweinebraten with Knödel, sauerkraut and gravy. Order big mugs of beer, a few shots and have a chat with the slightly grumpy staff. G’suffa!

There are several good pizza places in Berlin, but nothing beats Standard for "pizza napoletana". Quality ingredients sourced directly from Campania, excellent dough and a 500°C gas-fired oven is all that I need.
The Butterfly Lovers is a vegan Chinese spot tucked away by Volkspark am Weinbergsweg in Berlin. Although the interior is simple, the restaurant draws on influences from Sichuan, Taiwanese, and Hu Cai kitchens, making it stand out from more typical vegetarian places. It’s become popular enough that you’ll want to book ahead, but prices remain reasonable for the quality offered.

Addictive vegan chinese restaurant in MitteRestaurateur Wen Wang’s vegan mother (apparently) was the main motivation for opening of this restaurant in Mitte in 2021, in a quiet corner next to Volkspark am Weinbergsweg. The ”mixed chinese” cuisine has influences from Sichuan, Taiwanese and Hu Cai kitchens and it does it all very well. The food served is well above the run-of-the-mill ”ethnic” vegetarian restaurants that are plentiful in Berlin . The spartan interior design may mislead people looking in from the outside, but it is the food that brings people here - and it is solid gold. The restaurant has become so popular that an advance booking is a must for the evenings. The restaurant also serves lunch, which should make finding a seat easier. The food is best served with beer - or with the excellent homemade juices - so there’s no reason to discuss wine specialities. The prices are a bit above what you would expect to pay, but very affordable nevertheless. The Butterfly Lovers won’be featured on any ”best of…” -lists anytime soon, but it serves some of the best chinese vegetarian cuisine in Europe and you’re not going to be sorry for booking a visit.

Hole in the wall, no frills Levantine breakfast and lunch. This easy to miss, and rather grungy feeling hole in the wall restaurant on Berlin’s Sonnenallee serves up some rustic but highly flavoursome Levantine dishes such as musabaha, foul & fatteh. Most plates come with a side of pickles, herbs and flat bread. This place is high in flavour and low in price - don’t expect friendly service, or any frills here.
