My favorite of all time for Mexican food is La Palma. La Palma is in the Mission on 24th and Bryant Street. La Palma Mexicatessen is absolutely imperative to the Mission District for me because they are a tortilleria. They're nixtamalizing corn and making tortillas for the local community. From La Palma you can get your carnitas and you can buy things by the pound, which I love. And you can bring it back to your home, and it’s important that they also sell their fresh corn masa by the kilo and home cooks will come and buy the masa to press their own tortillas at home. I'm certain they also have some form of a comal or something. So that you can have fresh masa at home as well. Perhaps one of my favorite days in San Francisco is riding my bike through the Mission, getting a little huarache at La Palma, I'll stuff my satchel with some warm tortillas, bring them home, and I'll have tortillas to eat throughout the week. So this place is a very important institution, maybe an underappreciated institution by outsiders.
